About Me
I have lived in Ithaca since 1987, an unprecedentedly long time for me to live in one place. When I was growing up as part of a large family, we moved between countries and languages regularly--I'd attended seven different schools and was taught in three different languages before I graduated from High School. Five years was the longest we lived in any country. So, settling into Tompkins County as "home" still seems odd to me; but the beauty of the area, the lively music, art, and martial art scenes, and the concentration of talents of all sorts make me happy to be here.
When not working I enjoy photography, knitting, literature, and gardening. My husband and I are also interested in music and cooking. We have an adult son who lives in Boston.
My interest in therapy came after being injured in two accidents in 1999 and 2000. One was a car accident, one a bicycle accident. Both occurred for reasons beyond my control and both resulted in serious physical and emotional trauma. And when, after the second accident, I developed Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, I started to note how many other people were also suffering from similar issues, often without complaint. I became curious about what treatments work. In my own case, an initial talk therapy approach towards treating my Post Traumatic Stress Disorder proved to be ineffective and frustrating. However, subsequent EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) treatment was so effective that it prompted me to return to school to learn about how to become a therapist. My goal was to develop a range of therapeutic tools so that I might customize my approach to each individual's needs. And I continue to study both established and newly emerging techniques to develop effective interventions and to deepen my own understanding of mental health.
Licensure and Training
Therapy-related degree: My Masters in Social Work (MSW) is from Syracuse University, 2007.
Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW-R): I am licensed for individual practice in the State of New York.
I was EMDRIA (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing International Association)-certified in 2012. I am an EMDR therapist.
I have Level I training in AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy).
I am certified in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, 2022.
In addition to the formal trainings listed, I integrate mindfulness and breathing techniques derived from yoga and energetic techniques derived from Aikido and Qi Gong in my practice. I have found that EFT, an approach that integrates neurolinguistic programing and tapping on meridian points (the energy channels used by acupuncturists), can be very effective.
